![]() This storyline is as old as folklore itself. Even though he has been with many girls, wooed many girls, slept with many girls, fallen in love with many girls, he assures her she is the best one, the only one. He shows her everything about sex and relationships and she is his second chance. The good girl probably gets straight A’s and takes care of her family and secretly wants companionship because she has never had a boyfriend before. The bad boy probably rides a motorcycle even though the girl’s father doesn’t want him to and smokes cigarettes in secret. It’s simply the rebellious bad-boy and the notorious good girl. But you never see good guy and good girl, or bad guy and bad girl, or good guy and bad girl. You’re probably rolling your eyes right now. Most of them start with a bad boy and a good girl falling in love. The Girl Next Door is not just a persona - it’s a lifestyle and a mindset. (I confess that some of these shows, movies, and books are ones I highly adore.) Even in movies where girls are generally portrayed as smart or independent, the issue of the Girl Next Door persists. It creeps its way into literature and, consequentially, into our own lives, where girls face the pressure of wanting to become a girl-next-door figure simply because they feel that is what people expect of them. While it is present in most princess movies and Disney movies, it extends far beyond that franchise. ![]() This is not just limited to fairy tales and princess movies. Throughout history, men (and society in general) have desired innocent, flawless, quiet, distressed girls who are in need of enlightenment and rescue. It’s a systemic stereotype that has trickled throughout the ages, from the 1910s to the 1950s to the 1980s to where we are today. The idyllic innocence portrayed by the Girl Next Door is what makes this concept- and all of the themes it preaches to young girls - disastrous. Rarely will one find a romance novel or movie without someone who resembles a Girl Next Door, whether that girl is the main character or simply a sidekick or friend. Nonetheless, the Girl Next Door is the quintessential female protagonist of American literature and theater. In some movies and books, it is all five of these woven together, and some just combine a few themes to make the same old story. There is always a central conflict - a mean girl, a lack of self-esteem, a death in the family, a lack of friends or ever-present loneliness. The girl is always the same - modest, shy, intelligent but refuses to show or admit it, and needs companionship. In this same cliche is the irony of the Girl Next Door. This romance, like all cliche romances, included the boy meeting the girl, catching her off-guard, and pursuing a romance like no other - except that it was like all the others. In almost all the movies I saw, books I read, and shows I watched as a child, there was a boy/girl romance.
